European City of Sport is also made with stamps at the Portimão Museum

The presentation of an entire postcard and a commemorative stamp of Portimão – European City of Sport will kick off a philatelic exhibition at the Museum

Portimão – European City of Sport 2019 also goes to the Museum. One of the first initiatives linked to this project will be the presentation of an entire postcard and stamp commemorating the event, which will kick off the exhibition “Sport in Portuguese Philately”, which can be seen until 24 February, at the Museum of Portimao.

The exhibition will showcase 120 years of national philatelic issues with a sports theme.

«The stamps on display evoke some of the most representative events, institutions and individuals that have marked the Portuguese sporting phenomenon from the end of the XNUMXth century to the present day», according to the Portimão Chamber.

The collection begins with free-range issues of the União de Atiradores Civis Portugueses between 1899 and 1910.
Among the copies gathered, one that dates back to 1928 also deserves to be highlighted, which can be considered the first Portuguese stamp with a sports theme, being a world pioneer in the use of Olympic rings in philately. The issue in question was intended to financially support the participation of a Portuguese team in the Amsterdam Olympics.

Sports-themed philately only began to become evident from the 1950s onwards, with the 1952 Roller Hockey World Championship being the first competition held in Portugal and marked with a stamp. Other interesting issues that appear in the exhibition are several stamps that circulated in the former colonies/overseas provinces.

«This philatelic exhibition is complemented and valued, through a set of large-format panels, in which the Portimão Museum intends to establish and highlight a close relationship between the theme of sports emanating from some of the exhibited stamps and the spaces, associations, clubs and athletes, who have been using the municipality's territory for sporting activities», added the municipality.

This exhibition is jointly organized by the Municipality of Portimão/Museu de Portimão and CTT – Philately Section, in collaboration with AFAL – Associação Filatélica Alentejo-Algarve.

The collaboration between the Municipality and AFAL also resulted in the creation of a banner with the logo of “Portimão European City of Sport 2019” to be placed on all correspondence sent from the distribution centers in Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra, which they obliterate daily, about 20.000 letters and postcards.
