Câmara de Lagos supports Zoo to promote environmental education

Lagos Zoo hosts more than 140 species from all five continents.

Lagos City Council and Lagos Zoo will sign a protocol that intends to «promote environmental education through the acquisition of social values, knowledge, attitudes and skills related to the conservation and sustainability of the environment and species».

The document was approved at the last Council meeting, on January 23, and provides for the acquisition of “up to 1700 tickets per year, with a symbolic unit value of 4 euros, to be used in school visits and in the municipality's project activities, namely in the scope of “Viver o Verão”, “Saúde em Movimento”, of the Office of Support for the Elderly (GAPI) and of the Senior Municipal Council».

The Câmara de Lagos will also continue to sponsor Gibões Island (a rare species of primates from the Malaysian Forests), with an annual subsidy of 7 euros, and will provide financial support of nearly 11 euros for the share of promotion of the zoo'.

The application of the “Special Non-Domestic – Social” category of the water and solid waste tariff is another aspect of support agreed, a “condition that will allow the Zoo to respond to the equipment's expressive water consumption needs, reducing the value of the monthly invoice payable'.

The protocol also provided for the collaboration of Lagos Zoo in the commemorations of the Municipality Day, through the attribution of a 50% discount on the entrance fee to the municipality's residents.

The Câmara de Lagos recalls that «the Lagos Zoological Park, commonly identified as the Lagos Zoo, was inaugurated on November 16, 2000, having been established, over the years, as a space for leisure, education, of conservation and protection of fauna, in an exemplary way at national and international level'.

The Zoo covers an area of 3 hectares and is home to more than 140 species from five continents.

“Like any modern zoo, the Lagos Zoo has taken an active role in nature conservation, participating in various captive breeding programs for endangered species. At the same time, it has promoted actions to raise awareness among visitors, in order to promote knowledge of the planet, its biodiversity and urgent protection and conservation», adds the municipality.

The support given by the Municipality of Lagos rewards the «work developed over these nearly twenty years» and the «public interest function performed by the Lagos Zoo in the areas of education, conservation and nature protection, considering this equipment an asset for the diversification and qualification of the tourist offer and, consequently, for the tourist development of the town of Barão de São João and for the territorial balance of the municipality of Lagos».
