Block questions the Government about current and future dredging in Tavira

In addition to asking for clarification on the dredging of the Tavira dam, BE asked about the end that is being given to the sludge removed from Gilão

The dredging that is already taking place in Tavira, but also those that are yet to start, prompted a question from the Left Block to the Government.

The blocistas want to know, on the one hand, when the dredging will be carried out in the Tavira bar and adjacent canals, responding to an old demand of the fishing communities in Tavira. On the other hand, they ask for clarification on the fate that is being given to the sludge being removed from Gilão, as part of an intervention being promoted by Docapesca.

For the Blocist deputy elected by Algarve João Vasconcelos, the increasing silting up of the Tavira dam, a situation that «desperates the fishing communities of Tavira, Santa Luzia and Cabanas, with the Tavira dam being frequently closed, which prevents the exit fishing vessels, something that is quite harmful to all local fishing activity».

The maritime-tourist companies are also harmed, "be it in that it endangers vessels, or, more seriously, in the safety of crews and passengers."

The BE MPs subscribing to the question – João Vasconcelos, Carlos Matias and Jorge Costa – even say that the Tavira dam, the successive postponement of dredging “has led to an almost total blockage of the dam”.

The parliamentarians of the Left Bloc also want to know if the Government "will proceed with the correct replacement of the sludge from the dredging carried out in the Gilão River, in Tavira."

"These sludges are being deposited less than a mile from the coast and just outside the Tavira dam, which, according to the Sotavento Algarvio Fishermen and Shipowners Association, will contribute to the future silting of the dam," according to the BE.

The same association complains that the sludge is being deposited in places that are “good fishing grounds”, where smaller boats will no longer be able to fish.
