People from the Algarve and those visiting the Algarve recycled more in 2018. The Algar company obtained "an excellent result" in terms of the selective collection of waste, in recycling points throughout the region, reaching numbers higher than 2017, in terms of recycling, but keeping the same level of undifferentiated garbage.

In practice, this means that there was an increase in the amount of waste produced, but also that the population was more careful in separating and depositing them in the recycling bin.

During 2018, Algar collected 39.543 tons of paper/cardboard, plastic/packaging and glass. "This excellent result is a reference in national terms, as it indicates the separation/deposition of recyclable packaging by the population in the ecopoints with a capacity of 89,9 kg/inhabitant per year", according to the company responsible for the collection and treatment of solid urban waste in the 16 Algarve municipalities.

«It was above all with the active, committed and conscious participation of the population that these results were achieved. Thus, it was verified that the various awareness campaigns, promoted by Algar, among the people of the Algarve, were effective and contributed to these results, of which the entire population should be proud," he added.

The investment of around 1,4 million euros made in the acquisition/installation of 781 new ecopoints, distributed across the 16 municipalities of the Algarve, also contributed to these numbers.

«The placement of the new equipment is already bearing fruit, as it allowed for a growth of 7m827 in the deposit capacity, corresponding to an increase of around 3% in the number of containers made available to the Algarve population. Currently, the 30 municipalities of the Algarve can count on a network of around 16 ecopoints, which translates into a ratio of one ecopoint for every 3 inhabitants», framed the company.
