New brotherhoods celebrate the gastronomy of the Ria Formosa and Serra do Caldeirão

One of the brotherhoods celebrates Ria Formosa products, the other exalts mountain delicacies

Celebrating and promoting the Algarve's gastronomy, even though focusing on very different raw materials and origins, is the main objective of the newly created Confraria Gastronómica da Serra do Caldeirão and Confraria Marinha da Ria Formosa.

The Confraria Marinha da Ria Formosa was officially born in October and aims not only to contribute to the dissemination of the typical gastronomy associated with this lagoon area, but also to deepen the knowledge of what is produced here.

The first chapter of this brotherhood took place on December 8 in Ilha da Culatra and served to enthron the 25 founding brothers. The ceremony was attended by the godmothers Confraria Olhanense do Litão and the Confraria do Tuna of Vila Real de Santo António, who also represented the Portuguese Federation of Gastronomic Confraternity at this ceremony.

This, which was the 7th brotherhood to be created in the Algarve region, «has the principles of contributing to the survey, defense, promotion and dissemination of the cultural, environmental, historical and gastronomic heritage of the Ria Formosa and supporting research, creation and dissemination of works and the publication of publications on gastronomy linked to the products of this lagoon, namely on its history, tradition and ancient cooking techniques».

In the 1st Chapter of the brotherhood, the governing bodies for the next three years were elected, with the destinies of the Directory of Notables being under the care of Grand Master Cláudia Luz, with David Assoreira, Ilídia Sério, Virgínia Alpestana and Mário Silva in her team.

The General Chapter is chaired by Bruno Lage, assisted by Notaries Jorge Pereira and José Lezinho. Colégio Inquiridor will be chaired by Cristóvão Norte, assisted by Inquisitors Manuel Mestre and Gonçalo Santos.

The Council of Elders, which in addition to being a consultative body of the brotherhood also approves the admission of new members, is made up of Luís Fontinha, Jorge Carrega, Sílvia Padinha, Jardim de Sousa, Paulo Fonseca, José Daniel dos Santos, Marco Valle Santos, Davide Alpestana and Paulo Botelho.

About a month earlier, on November 9th, the public deed of the Serra do Caldeirão Gastronomic Confraternity was signed, which comes to preserve, defend and promote the culture, biodiversity and gastronomy of the interior of the central Algarve.

Before becoming official, there was an opportunity to validate the relevance of creating the brotherhood, in a typical mountain dinner, held at the Cooperativa Agrícola dos Montes Novos, where more than fifty people attended. Among them were those who had long advocated the creation of this entity.

«The Serra do Caldeirão has in its history and essence countless traditions, cultures and ancient gastronomic riches that tend to get lost with time. Owner of a biodiversity that makes it unique and a stage of unparalleled natural beauty, it also offers a variety of autochthonous, seasonal products – and not only – that make up the good Algarve gastronomy, healthy and Mediterranean», described the brotherhood.

«In this same sense, this project intends to defend, preserve and disseminate all the histories, traditions, cultures and gastronomy of our mountains, as well as work with the new generations so that they feel, interiorize and live all this wealth in order to contribute to its continuity in time,” they add.

The approximately 40 adherent confreres will be enthroned as effective confreres in the 1st Chapter, which will take place in May, in São Brás de Alportel.

The Installation Committee of the Confraternity is composed of four elements (Gonçalo Mesquita, Marlene Guerreiro, Cláudio Lima and Ivo Belchior Dias) and will be sponsored by the Confraria do Atum (Vila Real de Santo António) and the Confraria do Medronho – Os Monchiqueiros (Monchique).
