Slave Market distinguished by the International Human Rights Observatory

The distinguished museological equipment perpetuates the tragic memory of slavery and is located close to the place where, in 1443, the first large slave sale in Europe took place.

The Slavery Route Museum Nucleus, installed in the building known as “Mercado de Escravos”, in Lagos, received, last Monday, December 10th, the honorary title of “International Center of Living Memory of Human Dignity” given by International Observatory on Human Rights (OIDH).

«The award is part of a “world cord of solidarity, in the sphere of global citizenship in favor of Peace” and recognizes some remarkable monuments that, given their history, are today a space of culture and peace, transmitting tranquility and well- to be with all the human beings who visit them”, says the Câmara de Lagos.

The distinguished museological equipment perpetuates the tragic memory of slavery and is located near the place where, in 1443, the first large slave sale in Europe took place, when African captives were brought from Africa to Europe by caravels.

The award ceremony was attended by Maria Luísa Francisco, OIDH advisor, Maria Joaquina Matos, Mayor of Lagos, other members of the municipal executive, municipal deputies, the school community and other guests.

«The OIDH is a worldwide organization, headquartered in Portugal, which defends the dignity of the human person everywhere on the planet and promotes peace, in order to contribute to a more equitable and sustainable world, as well as for the good of Humanity».

With the motto “Serving Humanity”, the OIDH “gives particular attention to the biggest and most persistent social scourges, with a special focus on extreme poverty, hunger and malnutrition, which affect millions of human beings around the world”.

the same organization had distinguished the fortress of Sagres a few days ago, with a similar honorific title.
