Precarious researchers and scholarship holders demonstrated on University Day

UAlg's precarious group includes «51 technical collaborators and 18 researchers who perform, in the institution, positions and functions that are fundamental to its daily functioning»

A group of precarious people from the University of the Algarve demonstrated this Wednesday, December 12, as part of the celebrations for the Day of the University of the Algarve.

In a press release, the UAlg Precarious Scholarship Platform says it expressed its "disgust with the very serious situation involving precarious researchers and scholarship holders who, in 2017, competed for the State Precarious Regularization Program (PREVPAP)" .

UAlg's precarious group includes "51 technical collaborators and 18 researchers who perform, in the institution, positions and functions that are fundamental to its daily functioning".

The scholarship holders - performing secretarial functions, research technicians, researchers, science and technology managers, project managers, communication managers, mobility program managers, logistical support technicians, among others - struggle, as stated in a statement , by “an adequate bond to the functions they perform, by a decent work contract, by respect for the contribution they have been giving, over the years, to the institution”.

«Researchers are essential engines of scientific and technological advancement, guiding postgraduate students, coordinating projects, raising funding and contributing to the promotion of the University of the Algarve as a place of excellence. They are, therefore, entitled to an employment relationship commensurate with their roles and responsibilities," they say.

«Therefore, they intend that, having been considered a year ago as permanent needs of the Institution by the CAB (Bipartite Evaluation Committee) – the body that assesses the PREVPAP processes – they can now see their situations regularized, with open tenders so that can enjoy an employment contract in public functions for an indefinite period'.

The scholarship holders also mention the fact that the University of the Algarve has not, to date, opened any competition for the regularization of its precarious conditions, justifying itself with "the lack of budget allocation" on the part of the Ministry "which has never committed, before the institution, to finance the costs associated with this program».

The precarious people want the «University of the Algarve to understand as a strategic priority the hiring and regularization of the employment situation of the 69 workers in question».
