HPA Health Group Systems Director launches an app for Diabetics

App allows you to quickly calculate the number of units to manage, based on the entered variables

Carlos Segundo, the Systems Engineer at the HPA Saúde Group, has just launched an app that allows you to easily calculate insulin intake quickly and that is practical, easy and free. In other words, «everything that should be an application in health», stresses the HPA Saúde.

Aimed at diabetics who take this type of insulin, it allows you to quickly calculate the number of units to be administered, based on the variables introduced: Current Glucose; Grams of Carbohydrates that will be consumed; Blood glucose goal; Insulin Sensitivity Factor and Insulin/Carbohydrate Ratio (see box).

The app allows these last three default factors to be saved and therefore available for the next administration calculation.

The Rapid Action Insulin starts acting about 30 minutes after being administered, and must be injected before meals, according to the amount of calories that will be ingested, which is why the factors were placed in the app, allowing you to quickly know their interconnection.

«I tried to develop an application that was fundamentally practical and fast», explains Carlos Segundo. «I observed the needs and difficulties that my son had and tried to overcome them, combining the fulfillment of therapy with motivation. Motivating, arousing interest and empathy are crucial aspects for young people, and digital devices and computer programs usually have this advantage. In addition, in the first stage of knowing a chronic disease, there are many emotions to manage, many aspects to learn and many others to modify and, if this set is not made available in a friendly, “friendly” way, as they say in computer jargon, we're just creating one more problem».

For Marisol Anselmo, pediatrician with specialization in Juvenile Diabetes, this application substantially helps young people with this condition: «these tools for digital use and easy access greatly facilitate the daily lives of children and young people with Type 1 Diabetes» .

"This condition requires several insulin administrations throughout the day, depending on the intake of carbohydrates and, if this calculation is faster and more accurate, it will be very useful in treating the disease," added the pediatrician.

On the other hand, Ricardo Louro, Internist and responsible for the Diabetes Consultation at the Alvor Unit, emphasizes that «technology is a reality in today's society», especially among younger people. «This application created by Engº. Carlos Segundo brings together three very important characteristics: utility, simplicity and reliability. Created from a unique family view, it offers diabetic patients who perform fast insulin at meals together with carbohydrate counting, an easy-to-use tool that will help them a lot with the calculations they have to perform several times a day. With easy access through your own cell phone, with the parameters properly entered by your attending physician, the diabetic can know what dose of rapid insulin to administer, just by entering the value of their blood glucose and the amount of carbohydrates that will ingest».
