The occupancy rate, per room, in the Algarve, was 87%, 2,2 percentage points (pp) less than the same month of 2017, according to data from the Associação da Hotelaria de Portugal. 

The occupancy rate, when compared by zone, was higher in Algarve Barlavento (92%), compared to Algarve Sotavento (81%) and Algarve Centro (85%).

The ARR (average price per occupied room) was, in September, 118 euros and the RevPar (average price per available room) increased 4%.

According to data from AHP, nationwide the occupancy rate dropped by 2,2 percentage points to 86%, while ARR and RevPAR grew by 4% and 2%, respectively.

The tourist destinations with the highest occupancy rate were Lisbon and Greater Porto (92%) and Madeira (90%). In September, in Portugal, there was a negative change in all categories, with emphasis on the 4 pp drop in three-star units.

The ARR rose 4% to 106 euros. In this indicator there was an increase in all categories, except for the 5 stars where the variation was minus 2%.

RevPar stood at 91 euros, 2% more than in the same period of the previous year. The tourist destinations with the highest RevPar were Lisbon (124 euros), Algarve (103 euros) and Estoril/Sintra (92 euros).

With regard to the summer balance (July to September), in the ARR and RevPar, and compared to 2017, almost all categories registered a better performance, with the destinations Lisbon, Algarve, Madeira, Azores, Alentejo and Beiras reflecting an increase compared to the previous year.

The ARR, at national level, stood at 115 euros, 7% more than in the same period of the previous year, while the RevPAR grew 4%, standing at 97 euros.

In terms of occupancy, this year's summer was better than 2017 in the Beiras and Alentejo destinations. At national level, the occupancy rate, however, fell by 2,2 pp, standing at 84%. In this indicator, the highlight goes to the 2-star category, the only one to exceed the values ​​of the previous year.

The average stay registered a decrease compared to 2017, at national level, of 0,5% and stood at 2,03 days.

Cristina Siza Vieira, from the Hospitality Association of Portugal, says that «the accumulated results of the summer confirm what the indicators of each month announced: a better summer for the national hotel sector in ARR and RevPar and a drop in the occupancy rate».

«It should be noted that, since the existence of AHP Tourism Monitors, this has been the best summer ever for those indicators [ARR and RevPar], demonstrating that the average price is the engine of growth in the results of the Hospitality industry, which is undeniably very positive» , concludes the responsible.
