Tavira dedicates a week to diabetes prevention and control

The program includes actions aimed not only at adults and the elderly population, but also activities that involve students from schools in Tavira

Tavira will mark Diabetes Week, between November 12th and 18th, with a set of initiatives aimed at raising awareness and raising awareness among the population about the prevention and control of the disease, as well as promoting healthy citizenship.

The program is launched on the 12th, with activities aimed at the school community. Until the 15th, the Câmara de Tavira, which organizes the initiative, will promote in schools the activity “Hiphopkids”, a human circle, with the motto “United for diabetes”, and the workshops “A family with Type 1 diabetes”, “ Day by Day in Diabetes” and “Let's learn to eat… better”.

In the same scope, actions will be promoted with the guardians and the session “The family holding hands by diabetes”.

Awareness of the prevention and control of diabetes will also reach the interior of the municipality of Tavira. On the 13th, at 10:00 am, the action “Preventing is the best medicine for diabetes” will be promoted in Cachopo. On the 16th, at the same time, the initiative is repeated in Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo.

On the 14th, which marks World Diabetes Day, the conference “Diabetes and the family dimension” will be held in the auditorium of the Clube de Tavira, which will be preceded by a ceremony to celebrate the anniversary, scheduled for 9:30 am .

At 11:30 am, and already after a musical moment starring the singing groups “Lado a Lado” and “Avós em Movimento”, a session of the action “Preventing is the best medicine for diabetes” will be promoted again, aimed at the adult population and senior. The initiative integrates screenings by certified health professionals.

The walk for diabetes is scheduled for the 18th, at 10:00 am, departing from Praça da República, which will be preceded by the creation of the human circle. On site, between 9:00 am and 11:30 am, there will be a team from UCC Talabriga to assess blood pressure and capillary blood glucose.

«The sharp increase in the prevalence of diabetes is worrying, in Portugal and in the world, so it is important to join forces in the fight against its expansion and reduce the moral, physical and economic damage associated with this pathology», illustrates the Câmara de Tavira.
