Rita Redshoes gives an intimate jazz concert in Santo Estêvão

The Portuguese singer will perform at Casa do Povo accompanied by guitarist Bruno Santos

Rita Red Shoes will be at the Casa do Povo of Santo Estêvão (CPSE), in Tavira, this Saturday, November 17th, at 22 pm, for an intimate concert in which she will be accompanied by guitarist Bruno Santos, who helped to set a tone of jazz to the themes of the Portuguese singer.

This will be a performance for two and in a format that pleases the singer. “I especially like concerts closer to the public. I think they allow us to establish a type of relationship where it is possible to involve people in a different way in the songs, to expose a little more the processes of how the song was arrived at», explained Rita Redshoes in an interview with Músicália/Sul Informação.

«On stage we are both, we both sing and play guitar, I still play on a small piano and Bruno, as he is from Madeira, brings the rajão, a traditional instrument from the island, which has a very funny and specific sound, with which we make some games», summarized the singer, one of the CPSE guests in the scope of the “Autumn evenings” cycle.

This concert is the result of a challenge launched by Bruno Santos over a year ago: to make a jazzy approach to Rita's themes. For this project they used the singer's entire record, from “Golden Era” (2008) to “Her” (2016), not forgetting, “Lights & Darks” (2010) and “Life is a Second Love” (2014) .

But there were songs that, being from other universes, it made perfect sense to include in this project. «Just my songs, it would be interesting, but we also tried to find jazz standards, from Bruno's universe, that we both liked and try to transform them into my way of singing, since I'm not a jazz singer. Some I sing them in the bath, but I wouldn't dare to record them», confessed the singer.

The musical transformation process was done by two and there were themes that took some time to be at the point, satisfying both authors. But overall it was an easy process. «We have great communication and our two universes touch, there was great empathy, which facilitated the new sounds», highlights the composer, who adds that «the songs were not unrecognizable, their genesis is there, but Bruno brought chords with other colors, adds some melodies. It's curious to see someone who takes our music and turns it into something else».

Rita Pereira already has a history of parallel experiences with her career as Rita Redshoes. In 1987, he sang and played with the Atomic Bees, then went on to play with Rebel Red Dog and Photographs, and in 2003 he asserted himself as keyboardist for David Fonseca. He wears the red shoes in 2008, when he released “Golden Era”, but whenever he can, he embraces other challenges (film soundtracks, plays, documentaries or shows) that are not always recorded. Something I wish didn't happen in this case.

“We never thought of making a record of these new guises, but maybe an EP or filming some videos with these new versions would make sense. I would like to do that, because there is a lot of time dedicated to these side projects and then the result is lost in time, without any record. Let's see if the opportunity appears», said the singer.

“Woman Snake” is a song from the 3rd record of Rita Redshoes and which was given a new look for this concert. This is the original, the new version can be heard, live, in Santo Estevão, on Saturday.

The interview with Rita Redshoes can be heard in full in the edition #84 of the Musicália program.
