Portuguese will pay 3,5% less for electricity in 2019

According to the minister, "a 3,5% reduction in the domestic bill is guaranteed"

The Portuguese will pay 3,5% less on their electricity bill in 2019, guaranteed the minister of Environment and Energy Transition João Matos Fernandes. The member of Government announced this Wednesday, in Faro, that the electricity bill will be lowered for both domestic and industrial customers, and that «everyone will benefit from this reduction in electricity».

«The reduction of 3,5% in the domestic bill is guaranteed, part of which results from the reduction in the connection contract that all Portuguese, domestic or industrial, have to the network», explained João Matos Fernandes, speaking to journalists, on the sidelines of the inauguration of the new WWTP of Faro/ Olhão.

According to the minister of the Environment, the reduction in electricity comes “not only through the increase in the Special Contribution to the Electric Sector, but fundamentally through the transfer of 160 million euros from the Environmental Fund, to put in the tariff deficit drawer, which will reduce, and that is a factor that weighs on the bill that the Portuguese pay».

As for the fact that Portugal is one of the countries in the European Union with the most expensive electricity, João Matos Fernandes says that “what has to be done is an energy transition”.

“We have to have more and more energy production from renewable sources, dramatically reducing energy imports. We import 75% of the energy we consume, which is obviously an economic irrationality», considered the member of the Government.

Where "we have to bet" is on the endogenous values of our territory, namely "on wind, sun and water, which is where we have to bet, as there are no fluctuations or international markets that affect the price of energy".
