PCP: Demolitions in Farole Hangars open the door to "great private interests"

Communists say they are in solidarity with those who want "more investment" and not demolitions on the barrier islands

The demolitions of housing in the nuclei of the Farole dos Hangares, from Ilha da Culatra, in Faro, are a way of delivering a “valuable natural heritage to the great private interests”, accuses the PCP.

In a statement, the communists contest the demolitions held this Wednesday and Thursday, 7th and 8th of November, in the Farole Hangars.

“The current Government has already demolished around 60 houses on the Ria Formosa barrier islands, continuing a process initiated by the previous PSD/CDS Government,” says the PCP. All done "under the pretext of protecting natural values and a supposed renaturalization of the barrier islands," accuse the communists.

“To achieve this goal, they do not hesitate to sacrifice the rights of those who work and live on the barrier islands and those who use them as a space for fruition,” denounces the PCP.

«To stop the legitimate struggle of the local communities, the PS, as the PSD and CDS had done before, has bet on a strategy of dividing in order to better demolish. Division between those who live in one housing nucleus and another; division between fishermen/shellfish collectors and other users of barrier islands; division between first dwelling houses and other houses; division between those who have their homes near the waterline and those a little further away».

In addition to this division strategy, the PS, through deputies, mayors and local leaders, has not, according to the PCP, «hesitant to resort to deception, spreading the false idea that these will really be the last demolitions and that, in the near future, all other dwellings will be legalized”.

However, according to the PCP, following these will be followed by “new demolitions” until PS, PSD and CDS achieve “their objective of expelling local communities from the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa”.

In this communiqué, the PCP reaffirms “its commitment and solidarity with the struggle of all those who, instead of demolitions and handing over that valuable heritage to the hands of economic groups, want more investment in the islands, support for production and valorization of those who they live and work in the Ria Formosa».
