Algarve had more guests, but less overnight stays in September

The Algarve had more guests in September, but fewer overnight stays than in the same month last year. According to information from the National Statistics Institute, in the ninth month of the year, 522 thousand guests stayed in the Algarve's hotel establishments, 3,6% more than in 2017, and there were close to 2,3 million overnight stays, 0,7, XNUMX% than in the same month.

According to INE, the Algarve stood out in terms of domestic demand, as overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased by 19,7%, while overnight stays from non residents decreased by 6,1%.

Despite the decrease in overnight stays, total income grew above the national average, in the order of 3,3%, and reached 143,1 million euros. Income per room grew by 2,8%, reaching 107,4 million euros.

The average income per available room (RevPAR) stood at 79,1 euros, which translated into an increase of 1,5%. The average stay (4,38 nights) decreased by 4,2% and the net bed occupancy rate (66,2%) decreased by 1,4 percentage points.

João Fernandes, president of the Algarve Tourism Region, points out “the good performance of the destination in September, especially given the current situation of our main source market [United Kingdom]. Among foreign tourists who sought Portugal for holidays, the Algarve reached a market share close to 40% in overnight stays, which totaled more than 1,7 million, to which more than half a million overnight stays were added by Portuguese tourists, these with a growth praised by INE and very close to 20%»».

According to INE, between January and September, the Algarve hotel industry accumulates 3,5 million guests (+0,8% compared to the same period of the previous year). The number of overnight stays stood at 15,8 million (-1,8%). Income totaled 939,8 million euros (+4,1%).
