500 volunteers planted 5 new trees in Portimão

The two reforestation actions that were promoted had the participation of schools in the municipality

Portimão has 5 new trees since yesterday. About 500 people, including volunteers, teachers and students from schools in the municipality and sailors from the Corvette António Enes, helped to plant two plots of land, as part of the “Operação Montanha Verde 2018” project, promoted by Zoomarine.

In two different operations, 3740 trees were planted, including cork oaks, strawberry trees, plane trees, oak, fencing and cypresses, next to the Algarve International Circuit – area affected by a major fire in 2016 – and 1260 Italian stone pine and cypress at the Ponto de Apoio Naval de Portimão.

The action that took place at the Autodromo involved 400 volunteers, including students and teachers from the Bemposta and Júdice Fialho School Groups, who participate, in both cases, in the Environmental Citizenship and Education Program Eco-Schools, and the School DUAL – Professional Qualification. Also present here was Isilda Gomes, president of the Portimão City Council, Pedro Lavia, representative of Zoomarine, and the commander of the Southern Maritime Zone, Frigate Captain Cortes Lopes.

At Ponto Naval de Portimão, the trees were planted by 40 sailors and 60 students and teachers from the Poeta António Aleixo Secondary School, the Professional Course on Civil Protection and the Professional Course on Rescue in Aquatic Environment.

In addition to the volunteer work, there was also entertainment, as volunteers who were at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve were able to watch a musical performance of “Santuka na Mata Batucada”.

"This work will continue, as it is expected that in the next 3 years (2019, 2020 and 2021) another 5.000 trees/year will be planted again in other places in Portimão and, in the planted places, trees will be replaced if there are trees that do not they will survive”, assured the Chamber of Portimão.
