Luís Graça, president of the PS Algarve, wants the Government and the region's mayors to agree on “a strategy of environmental excellence, with the consequent reduction of the ecological footprint, encouraging electric mobility, energy efficiency and the enhancement of the immense natural heritage of the Algarve».

This desire was expressed both to the prime minister and to the 16 mayors of the Algarve in a letter, sent by Luís Graça «immediately after the announcement made by the ENI / GALP consortium of the end of the intention to prospect for oil in the Algarve».

«We have always maintained that our oil is tourism and that tourism requires environmental levels of excellence that are incompatible with oil exploration. The announcement by Galp / Eni to abandon the oil project in the Algarve is good news for Portugal and excellent news for the Algarve», he considered.

Now, "now that this dark cloud is now", the PS deputy to the Assembly of the Republic defends that a charter of environmental excellence should be "stimulated, with temporal objectives and goals, consensual with the Government, in order to guarantee ecological sustainability for the region and enhance the economic contribution that the Algarve and tourism currently give and may still give to Portugal».

Luís Graça took the opportunity to recall that he was coordinator of the working group created in the Assembly of the Republic to review legislation on oil prospecting and exploration and highlighted “the legislative evolution that has been achieved in this matter, namely the reinforcement of transparency, the role of local authorities and environmental rigor”.
