A Live Exercise (LivEx) exercise, which consisted of simulating an urban fire in the historic center of Mértola, tested, on October 18, the Special Civil Protection Emergency Plan for the historic center of this town in Alentejo.

«This and other exercises already promoted in Mértola are the most visible face of the prevention measures and possible responses, in the area of civil protection, that the City Council has been implementing in the county», explains the municipality in a press release.

In addition to testing the means and role of each entity in the event of a catastrophe, these exercises "assume great importance in sensitizing the population to these issues, as well as in raising awareness of the role of each one, whether in prevention or in a real situation."

The Municipal Civil Protection, the Volunteer Fire Department of Mértola, the GNR, the Port Authority of Vila Real de Santo António (which has jurisdiction over the navigable section of the river Guadiana), the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Mértola, the Social Security and the CDOS of Beja.

The main objective of the exercise was to test the Special Emergency Plan, as well as the response and mobilization capacity of the human and technical resources of the various entities involved.

The Special Emergency Plan for Civil Protection of the Historic Center of Mértola was approved by the National Civil Protection Commission, in 2016, and entered into force that same year.
