Lagos will have a budget of 58,6 million euros, which has already been approved, putting "housing as a high priority".

«A document with a lot of ambition and that conveys the aim of making Lagos a more solidary, safe, healthy, orderly, accessible, clean, sustainable Municipality and closer to the people».

This is the opinion of Maria Joaquina Matos, mayor of Lagos, considering that this is a budget «through which it is intended to implement many good projects that were in the drawer during the crisis years».

The arrangement of Estrada da Meia Praia and the construction of the Escola da Luz were two of the examples mentioned by Joaquina Matos.

«Not neglecting investment in education, culture, sport and social action and in other areas of municipal competence, the Municipality of Lagos places housing as a major priority for 2019 and beyond. The renovation of infrastructure, namely water pipes and sanitation collectors with more than 40 years of existence, is another aspect in which municipal funds will be applied».

The continuity of projects financed under the CRESC Algarve 2020, such as the renovation and expansion work of the Dr. José Formosinho Municipal Museum and the second phase of the Valorization of Ponta da Piedade, «also have a prominent place in this instrument for planning the municipal activity».

With this budget, the Municipality of Lagos wants to «structure its activity around four strategic axes, which are divided into twelve major objectives. In each of them, several anchor actions are identified».

Thus, in the axis “More solidary, safe and healthy lakes”, attention is focused on the search for solutions to increase the housing supply of the Municipality, on the renovation and expansion of the school park (with emphasis on the construction of the new EB1 + JI School of the Luz), in the technological modernization of the county's educational establishments, in the creation of the Student and Family Support Office (a first-line intervention service that will seek to prevent and avoid risky situations, contribute to the academic success of students, establish intervention strategies and the inclusion of students and families in the community) and in the continuity of the creation process of the Municipal Police.

The increase in the municipal fleet for the collection of urban solid waste and the strengthening of teams, the commitment to raising awareness among the population, the rehabilitation of the roads at Meia Praia and Luz, improving access to emblematic places in the municipality, including Ponta da Piedade , whose valorization will advance to a second phase, are some of the actions that will contribute to making “Lagos more orderly, accessible and clean”.

To build a "More Sustainable Lakes", the Council plans to launch strategies that include the requalification of the cultural and natural heritage, namely the Church of São Sebastião (National Monument), the completion of the requalification works of the Municipal Museum and its expansion, or also the requalification of the Casa do Guarda in Mata de Barão de São João and the implementation of the Rural Museum.

In parallel, «strategies promoting environmentally responsible economic development will be adopted, such as the provision of chargers for electric cars, the implementation of the Municipal Plan for Climate Change and the preparation of the Water Safety Plan».

On the cultural level, the Great Plan Options point to an eclectic and quality offer, which will continue programs already successfully organized and present new actions, highlighting, among others, the preparation of an ambitious program to be included in the National Celebrations the 100th anniversary of the birth of the writer Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen which will take place in the cities of Lisbon, Porto and Lagos.

The Participatory Budget, on the other hand, is one of the projects that will continue and will give expression to the axis “Lagos closer to the people”.

The document, containing the Major Plan Options, the Budget, the Multi-Year Investment Plan, the Annual Training Plan and the Personnel Map for the 2019 financial year, after approval by a majority in the Chamber, is now available for consideration by the Municipal Assembly .
