Lagos will join the Association of Portuguese Wine Municipalities, announced the Municipality of this Algarve city.

"Valuing the lacobrigense wine production, increasing the associative spirit and networking in the sector and promoting the economy around wine, establishing partnerships between different economic sectors, namely with tourism, are the purposes of the decision", explains the Chamber of Lakes.

In the debate that preceded the deliberation, Maria Joaquina Matos, president of the municipality, recalled the added value of the twinning with Torres Vedras, the European City of Wine, stressing that, although there are not as many producers in Lagos as in that municipality, cooperation intercity may prove to be a help.

The presentation of the membership proposal was consolidated after a meeting was held with wine producers based in the municipality of Lagos and registered with the Algarve Wine Commission with Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) and Controlled Denomination of Origin (DOC) wines.

«This meeting demonstrated the interest of the producers present in actively participating in the actions to be developed, with a mutual commitment to organize a wine tasting, as well as other initiatives that contribute to the enhancement of the wine produced in Lagos, namely actions awareness-raising with distributors», says the Câmara de Lagos.

The Associação Municipalities Portugueses do Vinho currently has 79 associated municipalities, including three in the Algarve (Albufeira, Lagoa and Silves), to which the Municipality of Lagos now joins.

Under the terms of the association's statutes, the decision to join will be sent to the Municipal Assembly.
