Researcher went to Vilamoura College to attend Philosophy classes for young people and children

Philosophy is taught from Kindergarten to 9th grade at Colégio Internacional de Vilamoura

The Brazilian researcher Liliane Sanchez was, on September 20 and 21, at the Colégio Internacional de Vilamoura (CIV) to learn about the work developed in the area of Philosophy for children and young people.

Liliane Sanchez traveled to Portugal, from North to South, to get in contact with examples of good practices and work methodologies.

At the Federal Rural University of Rio, Liliane Sanchez is a professor of Philosophy of Education and teaches Special Topics in Philosophy for Children to undergraduate students in Pedagogy and Philosophy.

In addition to this activity, he coordinates a university extension project, born in 2015 with the support of the Ministry of Education, called “The Child Philosophers: Philosophy Workshops in Fundamental Education” in a public school in the municipality of Seropédica/Rio de Janeiro.

His visit to Portugal arose during one of the three areas covered by the project, research (along with classes and extension), and aimed to «observe various methodologies adopted in Philosophy with Children by various professionals in various schools around the world».

At the Colégio Internacional de Vilamoura, Liliane Sanchez observed some Philosophy for Youth classes in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles.

Professors Laurinda Silva, Helena Neto and Fernanda Silva were involved in this initiative. The discipline has existed in the CIV curriculum in a pioneering way for 21 years, in all classes from Kindergarten to 9th grade.

The pedagogical direction of this college understands that «Philosophy is a pedagogical practice that aims to develop reasoning, creativity and thinking skills in general (conceptualization, communication, self-assessment), essential for the development of children».

«It is also a practice that promotes a true communication and learning community within the classroom, leading students to live very significant experiences at the cognitive, social and affective level».

«The meeting between professionals in the area is always fruitful, given the sharing of experiences and the time dedicated to criticism, which always involves the spirit of improvement», referred professor Laurinda Silva, at the CIV since 2011.

“Students recognize the importance of this weekly time, namely because they are able to better assess the quality of an idea, express their ideas more clearly and confidently, learn to respect the decisions of others or recognize that they are wrong. All these answers are of the greatest importance, but I highlight the last two because they are directly involved with the ethical formation of the person, a theme that precisely the researcher Liliane Sanchez addresses in her doctoral thesis», she also says.

“Class domain”, “attempt to build the relationship of responses between students” and the avoidance of “the questioning strategy” were some of the aspects mentioned by Liliane Sanchez in some of the classes observed.

“I really enjoyed having attended classes that begin with a small meditative moment using the Tibetan cup, as in Mexico,” he says.

After the Mexican reality, «a country where Philosophy is taken to very underprivileged classes and where Liliane Sanchez visited three small schools with different models, the researcher visited Colombia and the Netherlands, always focusing on the exchange of ideas and experiences between teaching professionals. of Philosophy.
