Chamber honors the donors and guardians of the Heritage of Loulé

Ceremony aims to "honor, value, esteem and respect" donors and guardians for their actions, "so that others can learn from this exceptional example of citizenship"

Some donated hundreds, if not thousands, of archaeological pieces that are now part of the Loulé Municipal Museum's collection. Others watched over the places where fragments of memory still exist, some are the owners of the true time capsules that are the more than 160 archaeological sites in the county. All will be honored by the City Council of Loulé this Saturday, 29th of September, at 15 pm, in a ceremony at the Salão Nobre dos Paços do Concelho, held at the European Heritage Days.

In addition to the honorees, the session will be attended by the National Commissioner of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins, the director of the National Archeology Museum, António Carvalho, and the president of the Chamber Vítor Aleixo.

Inserted in the exhibition “LOULÉ. Territories, Memories, Identities”, the nucleus “Identities”, authored by Pedro Barros, “registers more than forty singular people from Loulé, anonymous citizens, who have his name, as a synonym for the Museum. Everyone surprises us with their uniqueness and sensitivity», explains the Museu de Loulé.

This information and this «contribution to the creation of scientific knowledge and part of the history of Loulé are essential, otherwise they would be irretrievably lost».

Therefore, the ceremony intends to “honor, value, esteem and respect them for their actions, so that others can learn from this exceptional example of citizenship”.

Or, as archaeologist Pedro Barros explains in the exhibition's catalogue, a “visual memory was created, giving face to what was just a list of names in a record book”.

Some of these donors and guardians have already disappeared, but many are still alive. «All: some Marias, others Manuels, some Warriors and others Martins, some from here and others who stayed here, some with mountain mustache and others with a gingham air, some known to everyone and others known among them, some younger, others with more memories, some more fearful, others more available, some smiling, others overflowing with happiness. From all of them, we received pieces of local, regional, national history and they are all Loulé», adds the archaeologist.
