Clearing bushes and painting old walls of run-down houses in Faro these are different activities that new students at the University of Algarve (UAlg) will do during the Caloiro Reception Week, which officially starts on Wednesday, the 19th of September.
In statements to the Sul Informação, Pedro Ornelas, president of the Academic Association of the University of Algarve (AAUAlg), explained that, this year, the idea was to «extend volunteering activities to not only do the cleaning of bushes, something that is already customary».
“We want, and are looking for, old dilapidated walls to be cleaned and painted. There is already interest from some Praxe Committees in this action», he explained.
Another novelty is volunteering initiatives in social institutions in the city of Faro, an activity that already has people interested. "We are only dependent on the authorization of the institutions", said Pedro Ornelas.
But, in addition to the volunteer actions, the Caloiro Reception, which lasts until September 27, will also have a lot of entertainment. Initiatives that are already usual, such as the Mega Afternoon of Sport, will present some changes.
“We thought it was outdated and we are going to have a mega paintball tournament between the commissions”, said the president of AAUAlg to our newspaper.
As for the concerts, they remain on stage mounted on the Walls of Faro (House of Arco do Repouso), in Vila Adentro, in Faro. The quality of the poster, guarantees Pedro Ornelas, «is above what it has been in recent years».
For now concerts are confirmed by Toy (the 26th), Homies (21) and Mundo Segundo and Sam the Kid, also on the 21st.
This year, the Caloiro Reception area will also have a mechanical bull, which “promises to cheer everyone up”. The choice to keep the party in the Muralhas was taken by the location being «closer to Baixa», but it also ends up being a return to the origins.
«The Academic Week was at Largo de São Francisco. The Freshman Reception in the Walls does not disturb the city as much and does not bother those who live nearby. We are also close to Baixa and people can go out to the bars», explained Ornelas.
During the Freshman Reception, the usual academic practices take place, a theme that is often associated with excesses, but the president of AAUAlg is not afraid that there will be «more complicated situations».
“We had a meeting with the Praxe Commissions that were alerted and are sensitive to these issues. All will be very careful, not least because no one wants to get hurt, nor have any unfortunate situations in the reception of new students», he concluded, to Sul Informação.
For this Monday, the 17th of September, at 8:45 am, at Teatro das Figuras, the solemn reception session for new students is scheduled, which will be attended by Paulo Águas, dean of UAlg.
