António Costa closes 15th Congress of Architects in Lagoa

It is the first time that the magna meeting of Portuguese architects takes place in the South of Portugal

Prime Minister António Costa will participate in the closing of the works of the 15th Congress of Architects, which will take place from 25 to 27 October, at the Arade Congress Centre, in Lagoa.

This is a congress that wants to "affirm architecture in society and demonstrate its qualifying role in the preservation and construction of heritage, economic and social development and innovation in society", according to the organization.

With a panel composed of national and international guests and speakers, the opening session will be attended by João Matos Fernandes, Minister of Environment.

This will be the first time that the magna meeting of architects takes place in the south of Portugal and it is also the opportunity to celebrate the 20 years of the Order of Architects, as an institution.

Having as its central theme “The Architectural and Landscape Heritage”, the 15th Congress of Architects does not stop at the proposed central theme and during the three days of the meeting other themes will also be discussed.

Namely: the planning and enhancement of the territory, the rehabilitation of the architectural and landscape heritage and the professional practice of architects.

The Congress of Architects, which takes place every three years, always in different parts of the country, this year has a structure of participation different from that adopted in previous editions and opens two new forms of participation, in addition to the usual motions, recommendations and communications: the thematic debate and the transversal debate, with a view to involving not only these professionals but also other entities or professions linked to the exercise of architecture that wish to intervene and contribute to the reflection on the themes.

The 15th Congress kicks off on October 25th with a lecture by Spanish architect Emílio Tuñón, from Tuñón Arquitectos, distinguished in 2014 by the Spanish Government with the Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts.

The Fundación Docomomo Ibérico and the International Council of Portuguese Language Architects will be among the various guests at the Congress, and work meetings of the two international organizations are planned on the 26th of October.

The program of this initiative is also part of the ceremony to award the title of honorary member of the Order of Architects to the Superior Council of the Colleges of Architects of Spain (CSCAE).

The Arade Congress Center will continue to run in parallel during the three days of this event, on a date that celebrates the European Year of Cultural Heritage, a program of social and cultural activities, including visits, exhibitions, cinema and a materials fair.
