Loulé student receives Honorable Mention at the Ibero-American Mathematical Olympiad

Portugal won one gold and two silver medals

Ana Sofia Silva Guerreiro, a Loulé student, won an Honorable Mention at the 33rd edition of the Ibero-American Mathematical Olympiads, which are taking place in Monte Gordo and in La Rábida, Spain. The young Algarvian girl, a 12th grade student, received the distinction for having answered a question with the highest score.

Portugal, Spain, Argentina and Brazil won the gold medals at the event. The best qualified student in the table is Spanish, however, the team that scored the most points was Argentina. 22 countries and 80 students participated in the competition.

In this competition, seven gold medals were awarded, 19 silver and 22 bronze, with Portugal winning one gold and two silver. Pedro Moreira Fernandes (Pombal, 12th grade) is responsible for the Portuguese gold medal. Kevin Luiz Ponte Pucci (Chaves, 11th grade) and Rodrigo Tuna de Andrade (Matosinhos, 11th grade) won the silver medals.

Running on both sides of the Guadiana, the competition is jointly organized by the Sociedade Portuguesa de Matemática and the Real Sociedad Matemática Española.

Portugal has already hosted the 2007 Ibero-American Mathematical Olympiad in Coimbra.

Portugal's participation in the OIAM is organized by the Portuguese Society of Mathematics and the preparation of students is ensured by the Delfos Project, of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra. The Ministry of Education, Ciência Viva, Novo Banco, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Pathena support the holding of the Olympics.

Students who want to come to occupy a place in the teams that represent Portugal in international competitions must start by participating in the XXXVII Portuguese Mathematical Olympiad (OPM). Registration will be open from next week here.
