Lidl supports Silves firefighters after opening a new store in the city

The Lidl store «has a connection to the past, maintaining the original traces of the walls that remained of the factory structure»

Lidl, which opened a new store today in the city of Silves, will offer equipment to the Silvenses Voluntary Firemen Humanitarian Association.

The opening of the store, unique in the municipality, replaces one of the first Lidl stores in the country, opened 22 years ago, and was attended by local government authorities, namely Rosa Palma, mayor of Silves.

The company says, in a press release, that «in order to contribute positively so that the firefighters can perform their much-needed work in the best possible conditions», it will donate a three-phase compressor, a washing machine and a dryer to the Humanitarian Association of Silves Volunteer Firefighters.

The commander of the Silves Fire Brigade, António Domingos, as well as its financial director, António Moreira, were present at the ceremony, representing this institution.

Located at the crossroads between Avenida Marginal and Rua Cruz da Palmeira, «the store presents the modern concept of the new Lidl stores, with a glass façade and wider aisles that improve the customer experience and also the working conditions of employees, but it also preserves the walls of the historic building, making it a unique shop in the Lidl universe».

Installed on the site of the former Vilarinho e Sobrinho factory – a historic factory that once became one of the largest in the country and which was also the Silves Fire Station –, the Lidl store «has a connection to the past, maintaining the original traces of the walls that left of the factory structure».

In order to «eternalize the memory of the cork industry», Lidl also spread images related to the industrial space and the machines used at the time throughout the building.

With approximately 1.400 square meters, this store has almost twice the sales space and has a new bakery self-service and a wider space for the exhibition of fresh and frozen foods.

This new building was built with the environment in mind, with modern equipment with low consumption and LED lighting that complement the reduction of the ecological footprint, an ongoing commitment by Lidl Portugal to a more sustainable planet.

The opening of the new store implied the transfer of 18 employees from the old store and the hiring of seven more workers.

The shop is open daily from 8:00 am to 22:00 pm and has a parking lot with capacity for 116 spaces, as well as a parking space for motorcycles or bicycles. Access to the store is via a treadmill, elevator or stairs.
