Rise on the Algarve coast brings waves, wind and warmer water

Wave height can reach 1,5 meters in the Sotavento and 2 meters in the Barlavento Algarvio

The Algarve coast will be affected, in the coming days, «by conditions of wind and maritime agitation from the southeast, usually known as “Levante”, which will provide an increase in air temperature, in the wind speed from the east and a gradual increase in the seawater temperature', informed the National Maritime Authority.

Tomorrow and after, on the 2nd and 3rd of August, the height of the waves can reach 1,5 meters in the Sotavento and 2 meters in the Barlavento Algarvio. But, adds AMN, "these meteo-oceanographic conditions should improve between the 4th and 5th of August."

Although this phenomenon is normal on the southern Algarve coast, the Maritime Authority recommends that bathers, and all those who practice recreational activities at sea (leisure boats, personal watercraft, pedal boats, among others), take some recommendations into account, such as « opt for supervised beaches", "respect the signs of the beaches, namely the signs of the flags, as well as the advice of lifeguards and the Maritime Authority/Maritime Police", "do not hesitate to ask for help when in difficulties, whether at sea or even on land', or even 'watch the children permanently and from a close distance'.

Other advices are:

– Avoid periods of greater sun exposure (11am – 16pm);
– Maintain a permanent hydration;
– Always swim parallel to the beach;
– Respect a break of three hours after a normal meal before taking a shower;
– Do not jump into the water, except in supervised and specific places for this purpose, and acrobatics must be avoided;
– Do not bathe and/or swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
– Respect the danger signs of landslides on the cliffs;
– Avoid recreational activities or walks at sea in less favorable weather conditions, namely with jet skis, pedal boats, stand-up-paddlle, among others, as well as walks in the sea and visits to caves, choosing for these activities days where the sea and wind conditions are more favorable.

As AMN points out, recalling the old but effective slogan, "There is Sea and Sea, there is going and Returning!"
