The front of the Monchique fire, which this Sunday spread to the neighboring municipality of Odemira, is beginning to yield to the means of combat.

Meanwhile, the theater of operations of this fire, which maintains two active fronts surrounding the town of Monchique, will receive the reinforcement of 16 crawler machines, in addition to the 16 already in action. The machines are intended to open paths to allow access by terrestrial means.

No briefing which took place shortly after 13 pm, the district operations commander had said that the performance of these machines could be "determining for the resolution of the fire throughout the night", since the atmospheric conditions "will not be so severe" like these last three days.

Until that time, 110 people had already been displaced, in a preventive manner, 79 in 10 sites and places in the municipality of Monchique (Taipas, Foz do Carvalhoso, Ladeira de Cima, Pedra da Negra, Foz do Lavajo, Corjas, Foz do Farelo, Ribeira Grande and Portela da Viúva) and 31 in five sites in the municipality of Odemira (Varja do Carvalho, Moitinhas, Barreirinhas, Vale das Hastes and Craveiras).

However, since then people have been withdrawn from the Wind Gate and in Peso, along the EN266 and on the approach to the village of Monchique.

At this time, the fire, which started on Friday, is being fought by 846 operatives, supported by 237 vehicles and eight air assets (three helicopters, three Fireboss planes and one Canadair).
