Conference and commemorative session mark centenary of Sanatório Vasconcelos Porto

Initiative integrates the program “100 Years Later – Cycle of Health and Culture Conferences”

São Brás de Alportel will mark the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of the Sanatório Vasconcelos Porto, on 8 September, with the international conference “The sanatorium Carlos Vasconcelos Porto – 100 years after”, scheduled for the Museu do Traje, and with a Commemorative Session , in the building of the old sanatorium, now the Rehabilitation Medicine Center.

The sanatorium “opened its doors in São Brás de Alportel on September 8, 1918. A century later, the building now houses the South Rehabilitation Medicine Center and continues its mission to promote the health of the region and of the country”, highlights the City Council of São Brás de Alportel.

The international conference takes place between 9:30 am and 17:00 pm with the presence of «various national and international speakers, dedicated to history and research in different areas, with special emphasis on hospital architecture, the history of health and hospital care and with a deep incursion into the history of the former Sanatório Vasconcelos Porto», highlights the City Council of São Brás.

According to the municipality, this «prestigious group of national and international researchers and historians will address, in different areas of knowledge, the importance of this pioneering health unit, the historical motivations and the outstanding facts of the history of health in Portugal, without forgetting the look. on medicine in the Algarve».

Vitor Ribeiro, Cristina Fé Santos, Renato Gama-Rosa Costa, Gisele Sanglard, Graça Serejo, José Luís Dória, Fernando Rosas, Ana Luísa Matos, Vitor Matos and Isabel Palmeirim are the invited researchers for this conference, which will also feature the intervention of Diogo Cruz, Deputy General Director of Health.

During the period during which the conference is taking place, the Museu do Traje invites those present to discover the museums that can be visited and present medical material, «providing a unique opportunity to look at the history of medicine».

The second moment of the program is scheduled for 18:00, with a commemorative session that includes the visit to Espaço Memória and a musical and convivial moment, with moments of homage and evocation of the memory of this century of history «which deeply marked the municipality, the region and country'.

Also part of this commemorative program, there is a street exhibition entitled “100 years after – Health in São Brás de Alportel”, which can be visited at Largo São Sebastião, in the center of São Brás de Alportel.

This initiative is promoted by the City Council of São Brás de Alportel, in partnership with the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve, the Regional Directorate of Culture and the University of Algarve, and is part of the “100 Years Later – Health and Culture Conference Cycle” Program, which started on the 13th of April.

This cycle of conferences is promoted with the support of the Centro Hospital Universitário do Algarve (CHUA), of the Sub-Region of Faro of the Medical Association, of the Southern Regional Section of the Order of Architects, of CP Comboios de Portugal, of the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of São Brás de Alportel – Museu do Traje.
