Albufeira honors Carlos Silva and Sousa on the Municipality Day

Fisherman's Beach will have music with Resistance and fireworks

Albufeira will celebrate the Municipality Day on August 20th, with a program that will last two days. The posthumous ceremony of tribute and attribution of the Albufeira Municipality Medal of Honor – Gold Grade to Carlos Silva e Sousa, Mayor, who died in February, will be the “high point” of the programme, but there will also be a seaside concert with Resistance and fireworks at Praia dos Pescadores.

The commemorations of the Albufeira municipal holiday, which symbolizes the delivery of the Charter of Charter, in 1504, by King Manuel I, begins on Sunday 19th, with the “13th Proof of the Sea of Albufeira”, which will take place at Praia dos Pescadores, at 9:00 am.

This is an organization of the Ferreiras Football Club, which has the support of the Albufeira City Council, the Algarve Swimming Association, Albufeira and Olhos de Água Parish Councils, Marina Yatch Club and Albufeira Surf Clube.

At 20:30 pm, the official opening of Parque do Ribeiro will be held, located between the Health Center and the Camping Park, adjacent to Avenida Eng. Pessanha Viegas, where various activities and entertainment will take place. Parque do Ribeiro will be the starting point for a Solidarity Walk, which will cover the streets of the county.

On the 20th, Albufeira Municipality Day, the official ceremonies start at 9:30 am, with the traditional Hastear das Bandeiras, in Paços do
Municipality, to the sound of the National Anthem performed by the Band of the Sociedade Musical e Recreio Popular de Paderne. The Guard of Honor will be made by the Volunteer Firefighters and the Fanfarra will parade through the streets of the city.

The ceremonies continue at Largo dos Paços do Concelho with the homage and attribution of the Medal of Honor of the Municipality of Albufeira – Grau Ouro to Carlos Silva e Sousa. After the tribute, the portrait of Carlos Silva e Sousa will be affixed to the “Gallery of the Presidents”, a mural space on the 1st floor of the City Hall Building.

In the evening, at 22 pm, the band Resistencia returns to Praça dos Pescadores, after the 30 concert at the Al-Buhera Festival. This collective of musicians, born from an original idea by Pedro Ayres de Magalhães in the late 2017s, «represented a special moment in the history of Portuguese pop, with the elevation of the language of Camões to a common heritage», explains the Câmara de Albufeira .

The voices and guitars of Tim, Pedro Ayres, Fernando Cunha, Olavo Bilac and Miguel Ângelo, along with the bass by Fernando Júdice, the drums by Alexandre Frazão, the percussions of José Salgueiro and even more guitars by «Dudas» (Rui Luís Pereira) and Fred Mergner «reduced a series of classics of Portuguese music to the essentials, betting on acoustic purity and the strength of a collective to elevate to hymns themes such as “A Noite” by Sitiados, “Não Sou o Único” by Xutos & Kicks, “Fado” by Heroes of the Sea, “Born Savage” by Dolphins or “Danger” by Trovante.

At midnight, the traditional fireworks session at Praia dos Pescadores marks the end of the Albufeira Municipality Day.
