Users of Via do Infante take advantage of the summer to protest against tolls

CUVI appeals to the PS, PSD and CDS to redeem themselves "for once" and vote in favor of the proposals for the abolition of tolls that will be voted on in the Assembly of the Republic

The Commission of Users of Via do Infante (CUVI) does not give up fighting «for a toll-free Algarve» and announced actions «to take place during the summer», the first of which already on Sunday, July 22, during the International Motorbike Concentration Faro.

Anti-tolls activists are getting ready to go out into the street, but they do not fail to appeal that «the political forces – PS, PSD and CDS – that have always opted and defended tolls» redeem themselves «for good» and vote in favor of the new proposals for the abolition of the charging of fees in Via do Infante, which will be voted on this Wednesday, July 18, in the Assembly of the Republic.

If the proposals for the abolition of tolls are not approved, "the responsibility will have to be assigned" to those who make them unfeasible, they warn.

The Commission of Users of Via do Infante took this position public days after the Government has announced a reduction in tolls of between 15% and 20% on tolls for goods vehicles of classes 2, 3 and 4. Even so, there is no reference to this measure in the note sent to the newsrooms.

Since its creation, the group of anti-toll activists has never admitted any other possibility than the abolition of toll charges on Via do Infante.

“In addition to the vast economic and social damage that tolls have caused in the region, they have contributed to the increase in road accidents, particularly in the “urban street” named EN125”, defends CUVI.

It is because on the national road that connects Vila do Bispo to Vila Real de Santo António, «even with a rehabilitated part, accidents continue to occur on this and the entire length of the road».

«The Algarve will end this year with more than 10 thousand road accidents, with many fatalities and serious injuries (10 241 accidents in 2016 and 10 752 in 2017). According to data provided by the National Road Safety Authority, between 1 January and 7 July this year, 4890 accidents occurred in the region, with 16 deaths and 88 serious injuries. The month of August has not yet arrived and accidents must already be over 5. A truly unbearable and tragic situation», considers CUVI.
