Secretary of State visits Ilha da Fuzeta beach after work to reinforce the dune cordon

Beach reopened on July 10th

Célia Ramos, Secretary of State for Spatial Planning and Nature Conservation, will visit this Tuesday, at 10:00 am, Praia da Fuzeta-Mar, on Armona Island, after having received work to reinforce the dune cordon taken to cable by Polis Litoral Ria Formosa, SA.

The beach, which reopened to the public on July 10th, «was severely devastated» by the bad weather that occurred at the end of February and beginning of March this year, «having lost a significant volume of sand, which resulted in the cutting of the dune, at a height of more than 3 meters in great length, and consequent destruction of part the existing palisades», explains the Polis company in a statement.

In part of the affected area, Polis Litoral Ria Formosa, SA «had planned an intervention, subject to a public tender launched in January 2017, the designated
“Contract to Reinforce the Dune Cord of the Armona and Tavira Islands | Praia da Fuseta-Mar and Extremo Poente da Ilha de Tavira” with an execution period of 180 days and a base value of 1,65 million euros, with a community financial contribution through POSEUR».

The contract was awarded on 22 May and, according to Sociedade Polis, «multiplied efforts were made to streamline the fulfillment of its initial objectives in the reinforcement of the dune cord and, in particular, the replacement of sediments and reprofiling a beach front with approximately 200 meters, priority objective to enable the opening of the bathing season at Fuzeta-Mar beach».

The company emphasizes that the completion of the works made it possible to reopen the beach with the raising of the Quercus Blue and Gold Quality flags, despite having «only 50 days elapsed from the contract deadline».

According to Polis Ria Formosa, «currently, as part of the reinforcement of the dune cordon in this fragile area, around 80.000 m3 of sand have already been replaced, and partially re-profiled, allowing the beach to be used in parallel. public in general, concessionaires and other tourist promotion entities, in the intervention area».

The Municipality of Olhão emphasizes that «the passageways were also rebuilt, as well as the embarkation pier and the respective crossings». These interventions, which were the responsibility of the municipality, cost 219 thousand euros, coming from the Environment Fund.
