The “Culture Market… à Luz das Velas” took, from the 5th to the 8th of July, 50 thousand people to Lagoa.

Over the course of four nights, the streets of the historic center of Lagoa «were narrow to receive the many curious people who decided to feel a little closer to African culture, through its music – an offering made of beautiful and simple instruments, the dances, whose rhythms involve everyone, from the aromas and the superb art and crafts», says the Câmara de Lagoa.

Illuminated by thousands of candles that configure the different African symbols adinkra, as well as generic symbols that characterize the vast African continent, «the nights ran in a beautiful and lively way, full of commerce, good music and many smiles».

The musical animation, marked by the many performances of Aboubacar Syla & Doudou Ngom (Guinea Conakry/Senegal), Kilema (Madagascar), Muhsilwan (Sudan/Morocco/Guinea Conakry), Yeliké & Gassim Camara (Guinea Conakry), Zé Manel Martins Quartet ( Angola), Cherif Bacisko (Guinea-Bissau) and Adinkraene (Ghana/Ivory Coast/Senegal/Mali and Guinea Conakry) «made the nights unforgettable to the sound of the kora and instruments built with great work and creativity».

And there was also no lack of dance and percussion workshops, unusual entertainment with two African giants who toured the fair, gastronomy, by the hand of the African cook Carla Costa, whose knowledge transformed, every day, the cloisters of the Convento de São José into a gastronomic space afro – lusophone and arts, through the exhibition of African statues “Mãe África – the woman, fertility in black Africa”, on display in the Convento's exhibition room.

The Culture Market… in the light of candles returns for the year. The next edition is already scheduled for the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th of July 2019, and the cultural theme will be the Mediterranean.
