EHTA wins two prizes in the Eco-Schools Program Healthy and Sustainable Eating Contest

Students from the Algarve Hotel and Tourism School won two first prizes

The Algarve Hotel and Tourism School, located in Faro, won two Awards in the Healthy and Sustainable Food Contest of the Eco-Schools Program, in the categories of Eco-Menus (1st place) and Eco-Cooks (1st place).

The winning Eco-Menu, intended for the spring-summer season, had, as a starter, a Mediterranean gazpacho, followed by a hake burger and carrot peels, sliced sweet potato and sautéed carrots and green beans as a main dish. The dessert consisted of orange laminated with cinnamon, while the drink was water flavored with citrus and ginger.

After the eco-menu proposal, the schools were challenged to be “eco-cooks” and make the proposed recipes on the menus, recording a 3-minute explanatory video.

As for the Eco-cooks, the EHTA students kept the same menu, but adding a black bean brownie to the dessert, to accompany the orange.

According to Paula Vicente, director of EHTA, "this is the result of a daily work carried out with young people in these themes of promoting environmental responsibility and sustainability, which are fundamental to our mission of education for sustainable tourism."

From the Algarve, the EB 2,3 Júdice Fialho School, from Portimão, won a 2nd prize in the Cantina Brigade category.

For the third consecutive year, the Eco-Schools Program continues to challenge Eco-Schools to work on the theme of Healthy and Sustainable Eating.

In this 2017-2018 school year, a total of 227 schools accepted the challenge, participating in the different activities proposed, which aimed to motivate research on the foods we consume and our eating habits and encourage the dissemination of healthy and sustainable attitudes, through the elaboration of of concrete proposals such as eco-menuments, which could make a difference in the daily diet of children and young people, not only in the school context, but also at home.
