Diogo Piçarra, Gisela João and Nelson Freitas are confirmed names for the Arte Doce fair, which takes place from the 27th to the 29th of July, in Lagos.
On the last weekend of July, Lagos becomes the artistic capital of the Algarve's sweets, with the organization of this fair.
Lagos and the Sea – Land of Discoveries was the theme chosen for this XXXI edition.
That city has always maintained a strong connection to the sea, with great relevance in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, as it was here that Infante D. Henrique set up the caravels that reached the coast of Africa, starting the epic of the Portuguese Discoveries and of where Gil Eanes, the natural navigator of Lagos, left.
Today, this connection to the sea is still very present. «Lagos is one of the most sought after cities in the Algarve for its golden sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, the scenic beauty of its bay and its architectural legacy», says the City Council.
At this fair, traditional sweets, made mainly from almonds and figs, are joined by regional products and handicrafts.
The usual taverns with traditional Algarve snacks and musical entertainment will also be highlighted. The mandatory theme chosen for this edition will allow the participating confectioners to put their imagination to the test for the Arte Doce Contest, which aims to appeal to the creativity and aesthetic sense of the confectioners, enhancing the characteristics of the traditional sweet, which has the visual component as one of its greatest attractions.
The 31st edition of Arte Doce, which is free to enter, takes place again at the Municipal Sports Complex and is organized by the Municipality of Lagos, with the support of the municipality's Parish Councils, the municipal company “Lagos-em-forma” and of some restaurants in the county.
