The Algarve guaranteed 6,5 million euros of funding for scientific and technological research projects. Altogether, there are 49 projects in the Algarve that will benefit from part of the 375 million euros cake of a competition opened in 2017, an amount that represents the largest funding ever awarded in competitions for R&D projects in Portugal.

In all, 173 applications were submitted in the Algarve region, with 49 projects having been approved, submitted by the Algarve Live Science Center, Algarve Sea Science Center, Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere and Algarve University, which benefit of an incentive from CRESC ALGARVE 2020 worth 1,8 million euros'.

In relation to the previous tender with the same object, launched in 2014, the value was «three times higher», illustrated by the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Committee, in a note which reports the end of the process of communicating the results of the launched procedure. last year. At this point, “all tenderers have already been notified”.

The funds made available to entities in the Algarve that will be supported result from the joint funding of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), COMPETE2020 and the Regional Operational Program CRESC ALGARVE 2020.

Since the start of the current period of community funding, which will last until 2020, "investment projects worth a total of 16 million euros have already been approved, in infrastructure and research in the field of science, with funding of 8,8 million euros" , only for the Algarve, stressed the president of the CCDR of the Algarve Francisco Serra.

In addition, «a package of applications in the fields covered by the Algarve Region Innovation Council (CIRA) – Tourism, Smarts Grids and ICT's – Algarve Smart Region Project (RIA) is being evaluated, with an allocation of 1,5 million euros for financing, and a notice-invitation was launched for the creation of the Algarve Technological Pole, a project that aims to bring together skills aimed at technological development and innovation in economic activity sectors with consolidated or emerging expression in the region», with a budget allocation initial value of 3,8 million euros.
