Praia do Barril and the Armação's Anchor Cemetery

A tour of the «Fishing Heritage of Armação do Barril or Três Irmãos», under the guidance of archaeologist Brígida Baptista, from Associação Lais de Guia, is scheduled for 7th July, between 9:30 am and 11:00 am, at Praia do Barril, in Santa Luzia, part of the Mediterranean Diet All Year program.

The objective is to make known the fishing heritage of the “Armação do Barril or Três Irmãos” which operated, between 1841 and 1966, at Praia do Barril.

From this maritime heritage, housing structures, the arraial (population that functioned as a small village between April and September) and a set of other traces of the tuna fishing frame, such as the "anchor cemetery" with about 250 large anchors deposited in the dune cord.

In addition to the material heritage, the tour also addresses the experiences of the people who lived and worked here.

Brígida Baptista has a degree in Archeology from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon; a postgraduate degree in Nautical and Underwater Archeology from the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar and the Autonomous University of Lisbon, as well as a master's degree in Archeology from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

He is also president of Lais de Guia – Cultural Association of Maritime Heritage, headquartered in Santa Luzia, Tavira.

As a researcher, she works on the theme of tuna fishing in the Algarve, having as a case study the Barril tuna armature, in the material and immaterial heritage aspect.

«Mediterranean Diet All Year» is a program of activities to safeguard the Mediterranean Diet that aims to promote the multiple dimensions of lifestyle and the cultural landscape. It is intended, from the perspective of social, environmental and economic sustainability, to make known the productive landscapes, food, know-how and threats to its continuity, as well as exploring, experimenting and savoring.

The program includes tours of interpretation of the territory, culinary and nutritional demonstrations, film shows, art and craft workshops, among others.

The initiatives are promoted by the Municipality of Tavira and rely on the collaboration of local inhabitants and institutions, in a partnership that involves empirical and scientific knowledge.
