The “Há UV na Praia” project will alert bathers in the Portimão and Lagoa bathing areas to the daily UV indices. In its third year of existence, this initiative by the Manuel Teixeira Gomes School Group has once again reached concessions and restaurants in Praia da Rocha and Praia do Vau, in the municipality of Portimão, and has expanded to Praia Grande de Ferragudo, in Lagoa .
This project is based on an ultraviolet (UV) index visual signaling system, based on drop flags. The flags are hoisted at concessions and beach restaurants and are changed throughout the day, depending on the variation in the intensity of the UV index. These changes are guaranteed by employees of participating establishments, supported by the lifeguard of that beach.
“Há UV na Praia” was the result of an interdisciplinary work by teachers from the Manuel Texeira Gomes group in Porto, which involved several Geography teachers, a computer teacher and a Visual Arts teacher.
In 2018, the Castelos and O João restaurants in Praia da Rocha, the Lino, O Rebelo, A Casinha Portuguesa and Os Costas restaurants are involved in the project, as well as the Sr. Fernando beach concession in Praia do Vau. This year, “Há UV na Praia” crossed the Arade and will also be at the Mar Calmo beach concession, in Praia Grande, in Ferragudo.
«For the current bathing season, 2018, and in order to expand the geographical area of implementation of the project, contacts were established with the Alvor Parish Council and with the Rotary Club of Lagos», revealed the grouping Manuel Teixeira Gomes.
This initiative is sponsored by the Hospital Particular do Algarve and has the institutional collaboration of the Municipality and the Parish Council of Portimão, the Parish Council of Ferragudo, the Port Authority of Portimão, the Portuguese Environment Agency and the Clube dos Rotary Clube from Praia da Rocha.
