Kilema (Madagascar), Muhsilwan (Sudan/Morocco/Guinea Conakry), Aboubacar Syla & Doudou Ngom (Guinea Conakry/Senegal), Yeliké Camara & Gassim Camara (Guinea Conakry), Zé Manel Martins Quartet (Angola) and Cherif Bacisko (Guinea- Bissau) are some of the great names in contemporary African music, who will perform in the fifth edition of Market of Cultures… by Candlelight, which runs from the 5th to the 8th of July, in Lagoa.

Every night it will be possible to relax to the sound of the Africa Chillout Night Sessions, by DJ Ahmed Alsudani (Sudan), and listen to a group of percussionists and dancers from Senegal, Guinea Conakry, Ivory Coast and Mali. Afro-Mandinga rhythms are evocative of festive celebrations, religious rituals, emancipation and passage and spiritist evocation, among others that are part of the daily life of this culture.

But the main feature of the Market of Cultures… by Candlelight they are the thousands of candles, which appear at nightfall in Lagoa, to draw 40 ethnic and religious symbols related to Africa. Lagoa City Council awaits more than 40 thousand visitors in a moment that is expected to be magical, full of light and good vibes.

Every day, between 19 pm and 00 am, the Convento de São José area and surrounding streets are once again filled with the colours, sounds and flavors of another continent.

More than 60 artisans from various cultures and ethnicities will share traditions, flavors and arts with the thousands of visitors who choose the municipality of Lagoa for these days.

Music, dance, gastronomy, crafts, sculpture and African painting promise to mark this festival with unique characteristics in Portugal.

In addition to the aromas of African cuisine that promise to populate the Convento de São José, this can be tasted daily at the Municipal Market of Lagoa, with demonstrations by the Angolan cook Carla Costa.

The Convent area will also stage an exhibition of statues and artefacts from different African countries, called “Mother Africa – Women and Fertility in Black Africa”.
