This Tuesday, students from the Alberto Iria group of schools in the country distributed an awareness leaflet on waste reduction in the municipality. The children, who helped to produce this brochure, walked through the historic center of Olhão and they also had the opportunity to deliver the leaflet to city council members, who received them at the Paços do Concelho.

This initiative took place within the scope of the “Olhão Lixo Zero” project, «a challenge launched by the municipality to all educational establishments in the county, in order to participate in the collective purpose that is to reduce the amount of waste produced by the community», according to the municipality of Olho.

A challenge accepted by several schools, including those belonging to the Alberto Iria group. The brochure that was produced and delivered to the population is illustrated by children's drawings and contains messages “that call for the separation of waste, the use of recycling bins and the clean up of the sea, since, according to the small authors, “the garbage does not know how to swim”».

A work that was recognized by the councilor of the City of Olhão António Camacho, who assured that «this is a matter that the municipality takes very seriously». "We need your help, at school and at home, to sort the garbage, clean the streets, beaches and the sea," he said.

The Chamber added that the “Olhão Garbage Zero” project “is one of the pillars of the municipal program for the 2017-2021 mandate”. Its objective is, «together with the entire community, to transform Olhão into one of the cleanest cities in the Algarve».
