A concert by Sérgio Godinho with the Orquestra Clássica do Sul, the theater play “Erêndira! Yes, grandmother…”, which has as a background a text by Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez, and the show “Moda Vestra”, which explores the universe of Portuguese traditional music, are some of the proposals of the Cine-Teatro Louletano for the artistic program from September to December.

The bet on music continues, in which the national premieres, in Loulé, of new records by Samuel Úria and Luís Galrito stand out.

The variety of styles and aesthetics is also evident in the presentation of concerts ranging from Blind Zero (acoustic) to the Portuguese Symphonic Band and the Orquestra Clássica do Sul, the latter integrated in the new cycle “Clássicos na Avenida” (a co-production between the Orchestra Clássica do Sul, the Cine-Teatro and the Teatro Tivoli BBVA, in Lisbon).

Fado, Intangible Heritage of Humanity, will once again be present in this program schedule with another Gala of Louletano Fado singers, thus valuing and promoting the municipality's talents linked to this musical universe.

One of the main lines that has guided the Cine-Teatro's programming strategy has been «precisely that, through artistic commissions, providing unprecedented encounters between local talents from Loulé and renowned figures in the national musical panorama», says the City Council.

In the scope of the cycle “O Longe é Aqui” 2016 concerts have already been performed since 12 and this season two more shows are planned whose motto is, once again, the dialogue and reinvention of musical repertoires from both sides: the unique project “Fad'Nu” (by José Alegre, professor at the Loulé Music Conservatory, and Cátia Alhandra) with the interpreter and composer Berg, winner of the first edition of the “Factor X” program in 2014, and the inspiring musician Tatanka (from band The Black Mamba) with the talented singer Ana Newton.

The municipality also highlights two very special concerts: one by Avishai Cohen Trio and one by Sérgio Godinho with the Orquestra Clássica do Sul (OCS).

Sergio Godinho

«Cohen is a world reference in jazz/fusion double bass and his visit to Loulé thus demonstrates the Cine-Teatro's will to have an increasingly international dimension in its regular programming», considers the Chamber.

By the way, Avishai Cohen's presence in Portugal for a tour with only four dates (Loulé being the only city in the south of the country to be contemplated) came precisely from a challenge launched by the Cine-Teatro Louletano to the production company UGURU within the scope of Misty Fest 2018.

The long-awaited show by the prestigious Sérgio Godinho with an OCS ensemble – which will largely focus on his latest and acclaimed album Nação Valente (the 18th studio album) – is the result, once again, of an artistic commission made by the Cine-Teatro in order to present to its audience a musically differentiating and reinvented approach, «of unequivocal added value».

As for the “From the Flavors of Culture” item, in which the pleasures of the body (in this case the local cuisine) join the pleasures of the spirit (music) for an informal and intimate get-together, with guest and audience together on stage, this season has as a central figure the teacher and musician José Maria Vaz de Almeida (better known as “Zé Maria”), who has long lived in the municipality of Loulé and one of the founders, in 1975, of the Brigada Victor Jara. It will certainly be an engaging night of stories and chords, among family, friends and admirers.

In the other section dedicated to reflection and debate on current issues, “Conversas à Quinta”, the Cine-Teatro welcomes Manuel Rocha, musician, teacher and researcher, to talk about the challenges surrounding the teaching of Music in Portugal, from cultural policies and the old and new paths of traditional music – he is also a member of the Brigada Victor Jara and currently acting as the pedagogical director of the new Loulé Music Conservatory “Francisco Rosado”, to be installed in the restored building of the Solar da Música Nova, which will open later this year.

In the area of theater there are «two disturbing and questioning proposals included in the cycle “Silent Stories” (dedicated to the presentation of performative proposals related to current themes in the social, political and cultural areas) and in absolute debut in the South of the country».

«The first is the show “Amazónia”, by the prestigious company Mala Voadora, which focuses on an ecological soap opera and addresses the worrying reality of planetary sustainability at an environmental level, which touches us all – this presentation being in line with the concerns of the executive from Loulé in the Municipal Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change (EMAAC) initiated in 2015».

The second is the creation “Erendira! Yes, grandmother…”, by Teatro A Barraca, which has as a backdrop the reality of the sexual exploitation of minors in deep Colombia, based on a text by the Nobel Prize for Literature Gabriel García Márquez.

Added to these two proposals is a third, of a multidisciplinary nature, also included in the cycle “Silent Stories”, entitled “Canas 44”, by the dynamic association Amarelo Silvestre, which puts the question of what is disappearing in Portugal in perspective the experiences of two citizens, artists, mothers and women living in Canas de Senhorim (district of Viseu).

The prestigious German choreographer Pina Bausch used to say that without dance Humanity would be lost. The Cine-Teatro continues to favor the premiere in the Algarve of contemporary dance shows by renowned national companies and creators and this season presents a creation by Victor Hugo Pontes, one of the most appreciated choreographers of the new generation, from A Gaivota, by Anton Chekhov: “If you ever need my life, come and take it”.

Quorum Ballet returns to the Cine-Teatro to premiere, in Algarve, its show “Saudade – back to Fado”, an interdisciplinary approach, between dance, music and performance, which basically represents a return to the origin, bathed for a Portugueseness drunk to a great extent (but not only) in the literary work of Luís de Camões.

The involvement of the school community is obviously not forgotten, either with a creation that goes directly to the official syllabus, “Beyond the Sea of Sophia”, thus proposing the Quorum Ballet a reinterpretation of the work of a major writer, Sophia de Mello Breyner, wants with a show that once again calls for ecological awareness through art: “Marinho”, by the performer Margarida Mestre.

This last creation, around the maritime theme and imagery, “reveals once again the Cine-Teatro's commitment to using the performing arts and informal education as instruments for the defense of environmental causes”, the autarchy considers.

In addition, this project, which unfolds in various formats (spectacle for various audiences, previous workshops in schools and informal conferences), results from an unprecedented initiative and co-production between seven programmers nationwide (Cine-Teatro Louletano, Fábrica das Artes/ CCB, Ovar Art Center, Culturgest, São Luiz Teatro Municipal, Municipal Theater of Porto and Teatro Viriato), who joined for this artistic commission by the renowned Margarida Mestre and her team of collaborators.

The partnership with creators and artistic structures based in the Algarve region is also a strong line of the Cine-Teatro's programming, with two artistic residencies and a laboratory being planned in this line as part of the collaboration with the transdisciplinary festival Verão Azul, organized by the disturbing CasaBranca association (Lagos).

Raquel André's residency (who returns to the Cine-Teatro after having presented the “Collection of Lovers” project here) consists of the involvement of local artists and artist-activists who have political and aesthetic concerns about the current situation in their creative processes. world.

The renowned Gustavo Círiaco (Brazil), for his part, proposes an artistic residency that, working with children and the elderly, focuses on the issue of memory and landscapes that no longer exist. In both cases there will be public presentations at the end of the residencies. The laboratory, which will be divided between Loulé and Faro, will focus on a theme of great relevance to the Algarve region: creative practices in peripheral contexts.

The Cine-Teatro integrates, as one of the coordinators (along with Teatro das Figuras, in Faro), Rede Azul – Algarve Theater Network and its programming also aims to reflect this programmatic concertation that has been gradually built up over the past two years between the various venues in the region.

In this context, ten of its members, also in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, came together to carry out an unprecedented artistic commission to renowned natural artists (João Frade, Rafael Correia and Loulé, Ana Perfeito): the presentation from an original creation, "Moda Vestra", which consists of a contemporary, interdisciplinary reinterpretation of the universe of traditional Algarve music, which will tour the various Algarve theaters in 2018/2019.

John Friar

«Finally, it is worth noting, in terms of programmatic strategy, the continuation of the bet, started in 2017, in the area of art for early childhood (babies, parents and professionals working with this age group), through the partnership with the the most prestigious national artistic structures that work in this field – the Musical Company and the Theater Music Company – which will materialize, this season, once again in the regular presentation of differentiating and innovative shows, of a multidisciplinary nature and accentuated contemporaneity; and in the continuation of the commitment to the training dimension – a large gap in the region – aimed at professionals in the field and other interested parties».

The School of Education and Communication of the University of Algarve and the crèches and kindergartens in the Municipality of Loulé will once again be privileged partners in this objective.

Due to the adhesion to the “Culture for All” project, all young people who turn 18 in 2018 will have free access to the shows to be held at the Cine-Teatro (subject to room availability) until December 2019.
