Applications for the 5th edition of the Maria Veleda Regional Award, an initiative of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, are now open and run until 15 September.
This distinction, associated with Gender Equality, Citizenship and Non-Discrimination, recalls and pays homage to the Algarve's Maria Carolina Frederico Crispim (1871-1955) with the pseudonym Maria Veleda, proposing to highlight and recognize the merit of Algarve personalities whose long cultural and civic has revealed them as protagonists of relevant and innovative interventions in the Algarve.
The Prize includes projects and activities that stand out in the context of citizenship and gender equality, combating social exclusion, combating desertification in the interior of the region, education through art, valuing the intangible heritage (traditions, memories and identity), revitalization of historical centers and buildings, and also in the development of multidisciplinary, multicultural and network projects.
In this new award cycle, the competition jury is composed of Alexandra Rodrigues Gonçalves, regional director of Culture of the Algarve, Gonçalo Pescada, music teacher, João Guerreiro, university professor, José Gameiro, scientific director of the Portimão Museum, Manuel Brito, editor, Margarida Tengarrinha, artist and professor, Maria Augusta Casaca, journalist, Natividade Monteiro, professor and researcher, and Pedro Ferré, university professor.
Any citizen or regional institution, public or private, may submit proposals to be sent by post to the headquarters of the Regional Directorate of Culture, at Rua Dr. Pinheiro e Rosa, nº 1, 8005-546 Faro, or delivered in person.
The winner receives 5 euros, as well as a commemorative medal, produced by Novacortiça, which once again considered supporting this distinction.
