Glass, plastic, beach chairs, umbrellas and pallets. These were some of the types of waste that volunteers collected during an action to clean up the seafront between the beaches of Altura and Cabeço, in Castro Marim, held this Sunday.
This environmental awareness initiative, promoted by the Chamber of Castro Marim, brought together more than 20 volunteers, including municipal employees, residents and employees of the “Sem Espinhas” beach support concessionaire, who collected around 1,5 tons of waste, to large majority of which are found in the dune cord.
«The activity focused on the dune area, where the presence of waste is still significant and, on the other hand, its collection is more difficult, since, on the sand, the municipality of Castro Marim has a mechanical cleaning service which facilitates this task”, according to the Chamber.
Only about five kilos of waste were collected on the beach, including “butts, food packaging, pieces of polystyrene, plastic bottles, straw wrappings, plastic straws, plastic fragments, plastic bags and various packaging”.
«Simultaneously and within the scope of the environmental education activities of the Blue Flag 2018 project, the waste found in the sand was collected and characterized, an activity called “The usual suspects – from the river to the sea, without garbage!”, an activity that has the objective is the collection and characterization of waste, highlighting the top 10 of the most found in order to try to identify its origin», added the Chamber of Castro Marim.
The Castro-Marinean autarchy considers this type of action “fundamental for environmental awareness and preservation of the dune system and coastal ecosystems, essential for the balance of the entire planet, thus making environmental volunteering an increasingly important civic activity in today's society. ».
