The PCP wants to know when "the essential dredging of the Tavira bar and adjacent channels" is progressing. The communist deputies to the Assembly of the Republic questioned the Ministry of the Environment about the successive postponements of these silting operations and speak of a “situation of almost blocking” of the bar.

«At the bar, the height of the water, at low tide, does not exceed 10-20 cm, preventing navigation. Even at high tide, if there is a little stronger swell, the height of the water is not enough to navigate safely. The navigation channels of Santa Luzia and Cabanas are also silted up», illustrated the PCP.

A situation that “strongly affects fishing and maritime-tourism activities – the bar is only navigable 4 to 5 hours a day – and jeopardizes the safety of vessels and their crew and passengers”.

According to the communist parliamentary group, "small dredging operations in this area of the Ria Formosa" were carried out in April, but they have been "totally ineffective", as reported by the Association of Shipowners and Fishermen of Tavira.

In this way, the deputies of this party demand to know "when the Government will carry out the essential dredging of the Tavira bar and the adjacent channels".

Additionally, they ask whether the Government recognizes "that the heavy silting of the Tavira Bar and adjacent navigation channels strongly affects fishing and maritime-tourism activities and jeopardizes the safety of vessels and their crew and passengers."

They also question why the dredging planned for this area of the Ria Formosa was "successively postponed, allowing for a situation of near blocking of the Tavira dam to be reached".
