an open letter, against the advance of oil prospecting off Aljezur and signed by movements for the defense of the environment, associations and by the Algarve Tourism Region, it will be delivered this Thursday, 24th of May, at 17 pm, to minister João Matos Fernandes.

A demonstration is scheduled for this time, in front of the Ministry of Environment, to show “our displeasure, delivering to the Minister of Environment João Pedro Matos Fernandes an open letter signed by more than 30 entities that enumerates the reasons why we are against it. “Aljezur hole””, explains the Algarve Livre de Petróleo Platform (PALP).

«We are also directly against the decision of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) to exempt the Aljezur prospecting hole from Environmental Impact Assessment (AIA)», says the PALP.

Therefore, this platform demands "political responsibility, in the people of the minister of the Environment and the president of the APA, and that the real reasons that led to the non-legitimate cancellation of contracts for prospecting and producing oil and gas" are investigated.

«The non-submission to the EIA procedure is an undignified, irresponsible and inadmissible decision in a democratic State and goes against the recommendations of the Assembly of the Republic, of the Associations of Municipalities of the Algarve and Alentejo Litoral, of the respective local authorities (City Halls, Municipal Assemblies and Boards of Parish), environmental associations and movements, tourism associations and entities and businessmen, and all citizens who have heroically resisted this environmental attack that they want to impose on us».
