Vila do Bispo was invaded by about a hundred “Maias”, who can be seen in various places in the municipality until the end of the month.

The population of this municipality fulfills, once again, this spring tradition, creating rag dolls and placing them at the door of their houses.

The dolls are dressed in old clothes and decked with wild flowers to celebrate the arrival of May and spring. Accompanying them are "verses, critical sayings or social jokes."

The initiative is organized by the Municipality of Vila do Bispo in collaboration with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Vila do Bispo, Group of Schools of the Municipality and the municipality's population. The objective is “not to let a tradition that is more than 2000 years old die. Remember that this tradition has its origins in the feasts and traditions of the ancient Romans».
