Loulé celebrates the Municipality Day on the 10th of May and, to mark the date, will pay homage to Luís Guerreiro and Joaquim Guerreiro, Loulé personalities who died in 2017.

Two toponymic plaques will be unveiled at 12:00 pm at Urbanização Boa Entrada with the names of Luís Guerreiro, who was president of the Manuel Viegas Guerreiro Foundation, from Querença, and Joaquim Guerreiro, who was councilor of the Loulé Council and great promoter of events with the MED Festival and the White Night.

The festivities start, however, much earlier, at 9:00 am, with Praça da República hosting the flag-raising ceremony with the Artistas de Minerva Philharmonic Band and the Municipal Firefighters of Loulé. This is followed by the performance of the Children's Choir of Loulé, accompanied by the School Band of the Sociedade Filarmónica Artistas de Minerva.

At 10:00 am, in the Hall of the Municipal Assembly, the Protocol Ceremony of Awardees of the Municipality of Loulé will take place.

This year they will be awarded the Municipal Medal of Merit, Pedro Cary, European futsal champion, and Alexandre Costa, director of Escola Secundária de Loulé and president of the Executive Council of the European Association for the Teaching of Astronomy (EAAE), which was distinguished in 2010 by the Ministry of Education with the National Teacher Award.

At the Main Hall of Paços do Concelho, at 11:00 am, writer Mário Cláudio will receive the Grand Prize for Literature Portuguese Writers Association/Loulé City Council – Crónica e Dispersos Literários 2018.

Another highlight of the Municipality Day, which also coincides with Espiga Day, will be the inauguration of the Pottery, on Rua Martim Moniz, a project integrated in “Loulé Criativo”, at 15:00 pm.

«After the Casa da Empreita and the Oficina do Caldeireiro, this is yet another space that focuses on enhancing the territory's identity, with creativity and innovation as its driving force. It supports the training and activity of artisans and professionals in the creative sector, contributing to the revitalization of traditional arts and to the dynamism of new approaches to intangible heritage», says Câmara de Loulé.

The ethnographic parade of the Festa da Espiga, in Salir, is scheduled for 16 pm. This will be one of the most important moments of this event which, for three days (00, 10 and 11), will liven up this mountain village with lots of music, gastronomy and traditional arts.

For decades, the Festa da Espiga has been a tourist attraction in the interior that takes place simultaneously with the Day of the Municipality of Loulé.
