“History Dresses”, in Silves, a meeting of artisan photography, in Loulé, or a show with muses, in Faro, are some of the commemorative activities of the International Museum Day, this Friday, 18th of May, in the Algarve.

In the region there will be activities in Faro, Loulé, Portimão, Tavira, Silves and Albufeira. Starting in the capital of the Algarve, this Friday, at 10:00 am, the show “The Muses inhabit the Museum” will take place, a music and poetry recital by Afonso Dias and Tânia Silva.

This is "an opportunity to listen to beautiful melodies and reenactments of mythological figures that still inspire these places today and that guard the treasures of our culture", says the Chamber of Faro.

The first session is intended for classes in the 1st cycle of schools in the municipality, and will be repeated at 15:00 for families.

On Saturday, May 19, at 18 pm, the exhibition “The Family Reserve and the works of the Municipal Museum will be inaugurated. Faro: Manuel Filipe (1908-2002)”.

The exhibition brings together paintings by this artist from Condeixa-a-Nova belonging to the collection of the Municipal Museum of Faro and also to the family's collection, in an artistic register closely linked to neorealism.

At night, from 21 pm, there is silence to listen to the fado. Only the voice of António Pinto Basto will be heard, a renowned musician from Eborense who in the 30s and 80s received multiple awards and sang highly successful songs such as Rosa Branca. This will be the first time the fado singer works at the Municipal Museum of Faro, which is why it is a historic moment and one of the high points of these commemorations.

Participation in the activities is free but subject to a limited number of registrations, which must be made through the following contacts: 289870827/9 or email ([email protected]).

As for Silves, there will be a program of activities at the Municipal Museum of Archeology of Silves (MMAS) and at the Museum of Costume and Traditions (MTT) in São Bartolomeu de Messines, which will last until the 19th.

Thus, throughout the 18th of May, whoever visits MMAS will have free entry.

The program starts with “History Dresses – Photographic Experience”, an activity that provides historical facts or simple adornments (tiaras, crowns, helmets or robes of Roman soldiers, turbans, etc.) for visitors to wear and take photographs. This activity, which contributes to the diversification and enrichment of the experience lived during the visit to the Museum, is aimed at the general public and takes place from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm.

From 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, the activity for children and young people will take place “Do Puzzle ao Object”, with the objective of making known the area of conservation and restoration, its practice and importance in safeguarding the material heritage. Starting from recent and fragmented ceramic pieces, the participants are invited to make the respective reconstructive puzzles, then proceeding to gluing them and simulating small restorations.

Also for children and youth, the activity “Bingo no Museu” will take place from 14 pm to 00 pm. Inspired by the traditional Bingo game, cards will be made available, not with numbers but with sets of objects from the Museum that will be filled with objects that luck dictates. Whoever completes the cards first wins, not only the game but also a surprise that is reserved for the winner.

At 17:00, the “Inauguration of bilingual subtitling – Permanent Exhibition” will take place. From this day onwards, MMAS will have standardized subtitles in Portuguese and English. During the Estado Novo, the slate board, Salazar's photograph, the crucifix, the wooden desks and the National Anthem, sung by students every morning, characterized all primary schools in our country. In this activity, participants will experience the school of our grandparents' time and discover the main differences in teaching, in the materials used and in the relationship between students and teacher. The seniors' collective memory will be the starting point for sharing stories that made the history of objects and experiences of our daily lives.

“Speaking of Professions” is an activity for children, youth and seniors and will take place from 14:00 to 16:00. Here we will try to answer the question “What would you like to be when you grow up?” and talk about how, in other times, the profession was viewed and developed, sometimes for a lifetime. Here, there will also be a place to talk about professions that technologies and development have extinguished and, in some cases, which would still be missed today.

Since 1977, at the proposal of the ICOM – International Council of Museums (a UNESCO body), the International Museum Day is celebrated every year on May 18th. ICOM selects the theme of International Museum Day, as a choice to be made from issues that are at the heart of society's concerns.

Hyperconnectivity is a term created in 2001 to designate the multiple forms of communication today, such as personal contact (face-to-face), email, instant messaging, telephone or Internet. This global network of connections is becoming more complex, diverse and integrated every day. In today's hyperconnected world, museums are joining this new trend. This is why the International Council of Museums (ICOM) chose the theme “Hyperconnected Museums: New Approaches, New Audiences” for International Museum Day 2018.
