The Marquês dos Vales Grace Vineyard red 2012 won the award for “Best Wine in the Algarve” and consequent great gold medal in the wine competition of the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA), which took place on Monday, 7 May, at Teatro Mascarenhas Gregório, in Silves.

In all, 27 of the 85 wines in the competition were awarded (see list below), all of them with gold or silver medals. In other words, no bronze medal was awarded, due to the high score that the awarded wines achieved.

Quinta dos Vales, in Estômbar, Lagoa, where the wine that won the competition is produced, was the house that stood out the most, with a total of six medals won.

As for the gold medals, of the 14 awarded, ten were for red wines, two for whites and two for rosés. As for the silver medals, “seven were for reds, four for whites and one for rosés”.

Both José Carlos Santanita, president of the Association of Sommeliers of Portugal – the entity that technically coordinated the competition -, and Paulo Monteiro, regional delegate and president of the jury, highlighted the «excellent quality of the wines submitted to the competition, confirmed by the high average score obtained» , as well as the «visual care of the image of Algarve wines, with appealing and suggestive labels, demonstrating the sector's interest and investment in marketing».

Parallel to the competition, the 2nd Algarve Wine Symposium was held in Silves, an event that, according to the CVA, motivated “a lot of interaction and debate among the many producers and technicians from the sector present”.

The guest speakers “addressed diverse and current topics, such as wine tourism, the marketing and promotion of wines, both on digital platforms and through more traditional formats, such as fraternities or visits and experiences “in loco”».

This was also a moment to analyze some numbers, brought by Maria João Dias, director of the Department of Studies and Internationalization Support at the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho.

According to data presented by this person, sales of Algarve wine in distribution and catering grew by almost 50 percent in the first quarter of 2018, compared to the same period last year. An increase that is even more significant, taking into account that, at the national level, there was a decrease of 0,4 percent in the purchase of wines.

The XI Algarve Wine Contest was organized by the CVA – Algarve Wine Commission, in partnership with the Municipality of Silves and with the technical coordination of the Associação dos Escanções de Portugal.
