The 16 Algarve municipalities are already officially “resilient cities”. The certificate attesting to this in relation to each of them, as well as to the Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve (AMAL), was delivered yesterday afternoon by Milos Gubic, UN representative, at the official inauguration of the AlgarSafe – International Civil Protection and Relief Fair, which runs until Saturday morning, at Portimão Arena, with free entry.

At the ceremony presided over by Eduardo Cabrita, Minister of Internal Administration, it was pointed out that the Algarve is «the only region in the country that has already obtained, in its entirety» this UN certificate of adhesion to the “Resilient Cities” campaign.

“In Portugal, there are 25 cities involved, of which 16 are in the Algarve”, announced José Oliveira, who spoke about the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, promoted by the United Nations.

Strictly speaking, the Algarve is not about cities, but rather “resilient” municipalities. Jorge Botelho, Mayor of Tavira and AMAL, stressed that what is being certified are the «practices that we are already having and the commitment to strengthen them in the future», with the support of the District Relief Operations Command of Faro.

AMAL assumes a pioneering role at national level, as it is the only entity of a regional nature to join the initiative, contributing «thus contributing to give greater visibility to activities related to the prevention and preparation of responses to be given to disaster and accident situations. serious'.

For her part, Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão and vice-president of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities, responsible for Civil Protection and Fire Brigade, was keen to stress that the total coverage of the Algarve is «a great pride for the our region». «Without being in the Algarve, in the whole country there are only nine other “resilient cities”», he stressed.

The “Resilient Cities” campaign is promoted by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) and aims to recognize good practices that contribute to promoting disaster resilience at the local level.
