The fado singer Ricardo Ribeiro will sing songs by José Afonso, «in a surprising format», in a concert scheduled for this Tuesday, April 24, at 21 pm, at the Cine-Teatro Louletano.

This is the way that cultural space marks the day of the Carnation Revolution.

On the eve of the holiday, on April 24, «the fado singer Ricardo Ribeiro – one of the most versatile and contagious Portuguese interpreters in the national music scene – sings José Afonso in a surprising format, making his absolute debut in the South of the country, revisiting the most well-known songs but also other unique songs from the Afonsino repertoire», says Câmara de Loulé.

After being invited by the Centro Cultural de Belém for the “Carta Branca” cycle – which has challenged Portuguese-speaking musicians to present new partnerships and shows – Ricardo Ribeiro chose pianist Filipe Raposo, with whom he had never worked, for the musical direction and conducting the arrangements for the show “Ricardo Ribeiro canta José Afonso”.

In addition to being prestigious musicians on the national scene, Filipe Raposo and Ricardo Ribeiro have in common their appreciation for the music of José Afonso. Raposo has even collaborated with some of José Afonso's former partners, such as Fausto Bordalo Dias and José Mário Branco.

«José Afonso is one of the greatest, if not the greatest intervention singers, but his work is not just political, his legacy is much broader and deeper», says Câmara de Loulé.

And it is precisely a tribute to Zeca what can be expected of this “Ricardo Ribeiro sings José Afonso”: a whole legacy revisited and adapted according to the musical direction and conduction of arrangements by Filipe Raposo, accompanied by a luxury cast composed by guitarist Mário Delgado, by saxophonist Ricardo Toscano, bassist António Quintino and percussionist Jarrod Cagwin.

About Ricardo Ribeiro's artistic option, Nuno Júdice tells us: «his choice as a way not only to not erase that unmistakable voice, but also to make that presence seen – and heard – that, after the heroic time has passed, seems undeniable. in which it emerged, it has to be valued in the unique quality of the poet who, like few others, knew how to revitalize popular tradition and work it with invention and modernity and, above all, the musician who explored with equal modernity the chords of our songbook and took them to a whole people, beyond ideologies and classes, for the simple reason that, in this conjugation of the musician, the singer and the interpretation, the Art surpassed all differences».

The 90-minute concert is aimed at people over 6 years old and the ticket costs 12 euros, increasing to 10 euros for those over 65 and under 30 (Friend Card applicable).
